When a hurricane hits Jamaica, it doesn’t just topple trees and damage homes — it hurts artists and creative people.  Street dances are silenced, concerts are cancelled, artisan markets close down, studios flooded, and instruments destroyed. In a disaster, artists and cultural practitioners lose income overnight, and repeated disasters threaten to erase our cultural heritage. These storms will not stop, and each one risks eroding our cultural identity.

 Protecting Jamaica’s creative economy is not optional — it is climate justice in action.

You can help. Donations can be made to the American Friends of Jamaica Disaster Relief Fund. Your donation will help us to support our artists, protect our culture and build resilience in the long term.

Creatives are among the most vulnerable in society. Most rely on access to tools, studios, and audiences to earn a living, and they have no paid leave, insurance, or safety net. In the immediate aftermath of disasters, work stops; in the following months, savings deplete, equipment cannot always be replaced, and many creatives are forced to abandon their practice. This is not just a financial loss — it’s a loss of culture, identity, and community.

Kingston Creative is calling for donations to a Creative Resilience Fund that provides short-term financial support, access to shared workspaces, mental health support, disaster preparedness training, and replacement equipment.  This fund offers monthly stipends over 3–6 months to help artists in the most affected areas to rebuild their work and their lives, with dignity.
