The Board of Directors of the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) has announced the establishment of a $1 Million Matching Fund to support critical relief and recovery efforts in Jamaica following the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa. This fund, created and underwritten by AFJ’s Board of Directors, will match dollar-for-dollar all donations made through the organization’s official donation channels. Donors who contribute via corporate matching gift programs are especially encouraged to participate, as these contributions will also be eligible for the match.

Hurricane Melissa has been classified as a Category 5 storm, bringing the potential for severe flooding and landslides across multiple parishes in Jamaica. Communities along the coast and in low-lying areas are most at risk, and the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) is coordinating with local and international partners to prepare for emergency needs. AFJ has activated its emergency response plan to provide immediate support to those affected by Hurricane Melissa. Relief efforts include the distribution of essential food, water, and hygiene supplies, as well as logistical support for shelters and local response teams.

Working closely with the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), Food For The Poor Jamaica, and the Sanmerna Foundation, AFJ ensures that aid reaches the most vulnerable communities quickly and efficiently. Our efforts focus on both rapid response and long-term recovery following the storm.
